T L Hanna High School
Seneca High School
In only his 3rd start of the season, and 12th plate appearance, Matthew Burgess was the hero in Tuesday nights victory over 5A power TL Hanna. In the bottom of the 7th, with two outs, and a runner on 2nd, the sophomore 2nd baseman drove the 1-1 pitch over the 2nd baseman’s head. The hit drove in the speedy Coleman Smith to give the Bobcats the win. Sophomore, Ryan Moore, got the start for Seneca on the mound, and got a no-decision in the contest, striking 7 hitters in 6.1 innings pitched. Through 3 innings, the young righty, had allowed 7 Hanna baserunners, and Seneca found themselves in a spot they have not been in much all year long. Facing their largest deficit, the Bobcats were down 3-0 after. Moore however, showed a tremendous amount of maturity. He continued to go out on the mound and challenge hitters, this time executing pitches, and allowing only 3 baserunners the rest of the game.
The Bobcat offense also decided to give Moore some momentum, and push some runs across the plate. After a couple hits and down 3-2 now, Coleman Smith found himself at 3rd with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th. As the Hanna catcher dropped to his knees and lobbed the ball back to the pitcher, Smith showed of the speed again. Smith stole home almost before the pitcher could even catch the baseball. The Bobcats had tied the game 3-3 and found new life. After a 3 up, 3 down inning from Moore, Seneca would take the lead in the bottom of the 5th on a single from Smith scoring Jack Fassino.
Moore would get through the 6th, and then get the first out in the 7th before giving up a triple to the Yellow Jackets lead off hitter, and turning the ball over to Fassino. The junior would walk the first runner he faced, and throw a wild pitch on ball four which allowed the tying run to score. He would then work his way out of the inning, and pick up his first win of the season on the mound, thanks to the final inning heroics from Burgess.
The win moves Seneca to 11-1 on the year, and still 4-0 in region play.
The Bobcats will return to action on Thursday, March 30, in a region match-up with Crescent at Coach Mac Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
